In need of a summer project? I can recommend some rhombus crocheting…
This pattern is fairly simple:
(I use US crochet terms.)
All the rhombuses (or rhombi if you like) are crocheted in the same pattern of 20 rows, except from the halves (triangles) were you stop after row 10.
For a blanket like I made, measuring 100 X 160 cm, you will need:
45 blue rhombuses
45 black rhombuses
41 white rhombuses
8 half rhombuses
With my gauge (10 cm = 17 dc) I got a little more than 5 rhombuses from a ball of 50 grams.
I used DROPS Karisma. And a 4,5 mm hook. The finished blanket weighs 1250 grams.
Leave a 25-30 cm tail in the beginning and end of each rhombus. These ends can be used to sew the rhombuses together later. Use the diagram below to see where you use the different tails.
Pattern:
---The first 3 ch on each row is counted as 1 dc---
Row 1: 4 ch, 1 dc in first ch.
Row 2: 3 ch, 1 dc in same stitch (where the needle points in top photo), 2 dc in next st (where the needle points in bottom photo).
Row 3: 3 ch, 1 dc in same st, 1 dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in last st.
Row 4: 3 ch, 1 dc in same st, 1 dc in next 4 st, 2 dc in last st.
Row 5-10: Continue in the same pattern, increasing in the beginning and end of each row. Each row will have 2 more dc in the middle.
After row 10 you have made half a rhombus. You will now start decreasing in the beginning and end of each row. Decreasing = crochet 2 dc together.
This is how you do it: (Yarn over, insert hook in next st, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops) 2 times, yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook. This video is helpful.
Row 11: 2 dc together (the needle in the top photo show where you will make the second dc), 16 dc, 2 dc together.
Row 12: 2 dc together, 14 dc, 2 dc together.
Row 13-18: Continue in the same way, making 2 less dc in the middle part on each row.
Row 19: 2 dc together, 2 dc together.
Row 20: 2 dc together.

SvarSlettThese are joined by sewing. I used the tails from the start and the end for this.
SlettThere are so many different methods available to sew crochet pieces together. I see you cleverly used the tails for the sewing, but would you explain what stitches you used for the seams seaming and where you put the stitches (I don't see any distortion on any stitch in the rhombi)?

I use whipstitch for the seams. I sew from the back of the work, using small stitches. When I use the ends the seam will be the same colour as one of the sides so it doesn't show that much. You will see it when you look at the back.

SlettHi! I'm trying to create a rhombus, but I don't know if I'm doing it right. I got the first part where I increase right, but now I've reached the second half where I decrease. Should I still start every round with 3 ch?
SvarSlettHi! I personally would recommend to srart decreasing rounds with only 2 ch. It's usually done this way.

SvarSlettHello Solveig, this pattern is the reason I started crocheting and it is my very first crocheting project. It is very detailed and even a total novice like me can understand it. The one issue I had was with the decreases,and because I have no experience whatsoever I followed your directions step by step. I struggled and finally I found it on a video because on the pattern there is no mention of the 2ch at the beginning of the round opposed to the 3ch for the increases. I know it is a no brainer and I am laughing now but I wanted to give you my scope as a novice! Thank you so much for making this and sharing it so generously! <3 Maria
